Approximately 600 homes in the Lake Symington area, west of Bremerton, have been advised to boil their tap water because West Sound Utility District has detected E-coli in the water according to the Kitsap Sun.
Affected homes are between Holly Road on the south, Larson and Glory lanes on the north, Big Beef Crossing on the east and Coho Run on the west.
E-coli was found during routine water sampling tests. The cause is unknown and crews are working to determine the cause and will disinfect the water system.
Residents are advised to boil their water for at least one minute or use bottled water for personal hygiene, drinking, food preparation, dish washing and making ice.
E-coli is one of the most common foodborne or water borne diseases. Symptoms of E-coli infection occur within several hours of consuming contaminated food or water. The Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a particular virulent form of the bacteria which can cause severe illness.
