According to the report, the little girl suffered a three-inch gash to her right check and was taken to Inter Island Medical Center for treatment.
The dog is owned by a Seattle couple and the had left their dog unattended while they were shopping at Joe Friday’s Shirt Co. They said the dog, a Chesapeake Bay retriever, had never bitten anyone in the past.
Washington state’s dog bite law, RCW 16.08.040 is written so that the owner of a dog that bites is liable for damages. The law says:
The owner of any dog which shall bite any person while such person is in or on a public place or lawfully in or on a private place including the property of the owner of such dog, shall be liable for such damages as may be suffered by the person bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of such dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.
