This is also referred to as cross complaint. After a complaint has been filed against a defendant, the defendant may file a written complaint against a co-defendant or against a third party as long as the subject matter is related to the original complaint. When filed against a co-defendant, the pleading is called a cross-complaint, and as to that pleading, the defendant is called a cross-plaintiff and the party he or she sues is called a cross-defendant.
