Study shows autonomous braking systems and adaptive headlights reduce car accidents

Auto makers are designing some advanced technology systems for automobiles that prevent motor vehicle accidents altogether.

A new study by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shows that two technologies — autonomous braking and adaptive headlights — have yielded positive results in reducing accidents.

The HLDI compared the insurance loss records of vehicles equipped with the optional safety features with the same vehicles that did not have the advanced technology systems installed. By comparing the records, they were able to determine that insurance claims dropped in the vehicles equipped with the systems.

Currently, crash avoidance systems are offered as optional equipment on some Acura, Mercedes and Volvo automobiles.

Forward Collision Avoidance & Autonomous Braking Systems

Forward collision avoidance systems recognizes when a following vehicle is gaining on the traffic ahead of it and is about to crash. In some systems, a warning is made to warn the driver to brake. The greatest improvement to crash avoidance is when the vehicle is also equipped with “autonomous braking” in which the vehicle automatically brakes when the driver doesn’t respond to the warning in time.

HLDI data found that cars equipped with autonomous braking had 14% fewer rear-end car accidents than those not equipped with the autonomous braking and only the collision avoidance warning system.

Adaptive Headlights

Adaptive headlights are headlights in which the beam adjusts automatically depending on the direction of the steering wheel. Adaptive headlights allow drivers to see better at night by providing a wider beam pattern and see better on curvy roads as they turn in response to the steering wheel.

Adaptive headlights are reducing car accidents significantly and not only in single car accidents.

Lane Departure Warning Systems

Lane departure warning systems warn drivers when they are departing their lane. Fatigued drivers will often drift out of their lane. However, this technology is not reducing accidents as hoped. One reason may be is that they depend on driver’s reacting to the warning signal. Future systems may have the vehicle react when a car starts to drift out of its lane.

Electronic Stability Control

In the past few years, electronic stability control (ESC) was a technology that was first introduced in high-end cars but have become standard in all automobiles resulting in fewer car accidents.
