Teen in car trunk injured in Bellingham single-car accident

A teenage boy, who was riding in the trunk of a car, and another person were injured in a single car accident on Britton Road in Bellingham on Sunday around 4:15am.

According to a report in The Bellingham Herald, seven people were jammed into a Honda Civic and one other person was riding in the trunk of the car when the vehicle went off the road and crashed into an embankment after running a stop sign.

One person, who was lying across the laps of three belted people in the rear seat, was injured along with the boy in the trunk. The injured were taken to St. Joseph Hospital; their injures appear to be non life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle and the non-injured passengers fled the accident scene. However, the driver has been identified.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office believes alcohol was a factor in the car accident.
