Burnt Ridge Orchards recalls hazelnuts due to possible salmonella contamination

Burnt Ridge Orchards located in Onalaska, Washington, is recalling just under 100 pounds of shelled hazelnuts sold between Nov. 17 and Dec. 14 at the Olympia Farmers Market for fear of salmonella contamination reports The Olympian.

The recall comes after routine testing made by the Food and Drug Administration at the shelling company. The unnamed processing company has halted the nut processing until the FDA finds the source of the contamination.

Salmonella is a type of food borne illness that can cause from mild to serious illness in affected people. Outbreaks of salmonellosis has made the news in the past few years because of contaminated ice cream and bags of spinach.
