OSTEOLYSIS

OSTEOLYSIS:
Active resorption or degeneration of bone caused by disease, infection or ischemia. In total hip replacement patients it can be caused when there is metal-on-metal rubbing of the artificial hip joint which releases metal ions such as cobalt and chromium. These wear particles trigger an immune response which causes resorption of living bone tissues.

Often osteoloysis is asymptomatic -- without symptoms -- and can lead to the hip implant loosening or a bone breaking.
