Carbon monoxide poisoning a danger during power outages

The Pacific Northwest has experienced a severe storm this past week and The Seattle Times reports that 191,000 Puget Sound Energy power customers are without power.

During times of power outages, there are always several incidences of people suffering carbon monoxide poisoning or death.
seattle carbon monoxide lawsuit
In Kent, Washington, in two separate incidences, two families were hospitalized after becoming ill from carbon monoxide poisoning. In both cases, the families were using charcoal barbecues for heat according to KOMO News.

Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that is colorless and odorless and when people are exposed to it without sufficient proper ventilation they are unable to absorb oxygen and they become ill with symptoms what include confusion, headaches, chest pains, confusion, shortness of breath, vomiting, drowsiness and flu-like symptoms. With higher exposure levels victims can experience central nervous system damage, heart problems and even death.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is the number one cause of accidental poisoning deaths every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 500 people die and more than 15,000 are treated in hospital ER rooms every year due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide poisoning cases arise during power outages when people try to warm their homes with alternate methods including portable stoves, barbecues and generators.

Of course it doesn't have to be the middle of a power outage for carbon monoxide poisoning occur. Faulty appliances, unventilated heaters, clogged chimneys and cars left running in a garage can all lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Be careful frying that turkey!

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday that most Americans enjoy really look forward to. Most families cook a turkey and try hard to serve a turkey that is moist tender and juicy.

In the past few years, home chefs have embraced deep frying the turkey because it does not require as much cooking time than other methods such as baking or grilling on a rotisserie and it leaves the meat juicy with a crispy skin.

Deep frying turkeys can be delicious but every year fires related to turkey fires result in approximately five deaths and 60 burn injuries and the damage or destruction of nearly 900 homes.

These facts are pretty scary but they should not deter you from frying your turkey if this is your preferred cooking method. However, you should follow these safety tips:
turkey.jpg

  • Never fry a frozen turkey. Defrost your turkey fully before frying.
  • Watch the oil thermometer. You should keep your frying oil around 350 degrees. Allowing the oil to over heat to 400 degrees or more can cause a fire.
  • Don’t overfill the fryer with oil. If you put too much oil in your turkey fryer and then add your turkey, it will overflow and the oil can come in contact with the flame and catch on fire.
  • Do not fry your turkey indoors. You should fry your turkey away from garages, wooden structures and the deck so that if it catches on fire it does not catch your home on fire. You should never fry your turkey inside.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  • Wear proper protective gear including heavy gloves or oven mitts and wear proper shoe coverings.
  • Lower and remove the turkey slowly to avoid splashing.

Burn victims need the support of many

Every year, thousands of people suffer a burn injury in Washington State. The Center for Disease Control cites fire and burns injuries as the 5th leading cause of accidental death. Nearly half of those that suffer a burn injury are children under the age of four years old.

People suffer burn injuries in a variety of different ways: car fires, building fires, explosions, scalds, shocks, gas explosion, candles, fireplace and outdoor fire pit accidents, and fireworks accidents are just some of the ways that people are injured.

Burn injuries can be extremely painful and the skilled care in treating someone for a burn injury is often at a trauma center. Serious burn injuries usually require multiple surgeries, skin grafts and afterwards require lengthy rehabilitation.

The burn injury victim needs the support of family and friends to overcome the physical and emotional trauma of a burn injury. There are many support groups for burn victims and their families which can help support the burn survivor with love and acceptance as they recover from their injury and re-enter society.

There are also a couple of summer camps in the greater Seattle area especially for burn injured children. Camp Phoenix in Everett Washington and the Northwest Burn Foundation Summer Camp in Seattle are two fine programs that support children. The camps provide a lot of fun for children, a chance to socialize and also provide counseling.

Often in the case of a burn injury there are legal matters to attend to and insurance claims to be made. A burn injury attorney can be an important support person for the family of a burn victim. When the injury was due to a defective product or the negligence of another, the victim has a legal right to seek compensation for damages which would include rehabilitation, loss of salary or future salary and compensation for pain and suffering. Personal injury attorneys that specialize in burn injury cases will work be an advocate for the burn victim and their family.

CPSC recalls Napa gel fuel after dozens of accidents

The Washington State Fire Marshall, Captain Jason Berry, in a press release, informed consumers not to use FIREGEL or NAPAfire manufactured by Napa Home & Garden and sold at retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Shopko, Restoration Hardware and Amazon.com between December 2009 and June 2011 because the products pose a burn hazard to consumers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall of half-million bottles and jugs after dozens of 37 accidents involving the product and 23 burn injuries. According to the CPSC, the product can ignite unexpectedly and splatter onto people when it is poured into a firepot. When the fuel burns, consumers do not always see a flame so they do not realize the product is still burning.

The State Fire Marshall says that consumers should immediately desist using the product and return it to the retailer.

See the Napa Home and Garden web-site for full information.

Breakthrough in treatment of burn injuries

As a Bellevue personal injury attorney representing patients who have suffered serious burn injuries, we are happy to see a breakthrough in the treatment of burn injuries.

The new dressing could greatly help people who have severe burn injuries due to acid or fire.

A winner of the Bayer Innovation of the Year Award in 2010, the new product is especially valuable in the developing world where ra materials would allow for lower cost manufacturing.

Congratulations to Dr. Azam Ali whose research on utilizing and re-engineering bio-based materials provides hope and healing to burn victims. With more than one million burn injuries every year in the United States and thousands occurring in Washington state, fire and burn injuries are the firth leading cause of accidental or preventable death.

NHTSA asked to investigate car seat heaters after burn injury reports

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been asked by a group of safety advocates, including Safety Research & Strategies (SRS), to determine if there is a problem with car seat heaters after reports that defective heaters have caused burn injuries.

The SRS group believes that seat heaters in some cars exceed tolerable levels. At the present time, there are no industry-wide standards for seat heater design or temperatures. Most drivers can sense when their seat heater is too hot but in some disabled drivers and passengers, burn injuries can result if a heater is too hot and they are unable to sense the excessive temperature.

There have been reports of defective heaters burning holes in seat covers as well as injuring drivers.

SRS asks that:

  • Manufacturers put all seat heaters on a timer
  • Manufacturers put heat limits on seat heater temperatures
  • Allow controls which enables disabled drivers and passengers to completely disconnect seat heaters.
We hope this the NHTSA will seriously looking into this manner because a serious burn injury caused by a seat heater seems entirely preventable.

Kennewick man seriously burned after fueling pickup truck

The Seattle Times reports that a Kennewick, Washington man suffered serious burn injuries after he put fuel in his pickup truck.

The man jumped from his moving pickup truck and the truck crashed into a flagpole.

Gas Station Accidents are more common than one might think. Gasoline burns kill approximately 4,500 people a year while 10,000 more die from infections caused by the burn injury.

Some gasoline station accidents are a result of carelessness or negligence. We've read reports on accidents caused when one driver runs into another vehicle pushing it into a gas pump or sparks coming into contact with fuel causing an explosion. People must exercise extreme care when using smoking materials and matches or lighters while fueling their motor vehicles.

Sometimes gas station fires can be caused when necessary maintenance of pumps is not done. In this case the premise owner is liable for damages.

Seattle City Light discovers more electrified light poles

Seattle City Light started inspecting light poles throughout the city after a Sammy the dog was killed in a Seattle electrocution accident. The Seattle Times reports that since the inspections began, Seattle City Light has found 21 hazardous streetlights that had the potential to shock or electrocute a person or a pet.

It appears that the cause of the electrical problems has several causes including Improper installation of equipment; Poor installation instructions; Deterioration of aging equipment; and Improper testing and maintenance of equipment.

Mark Voigtsberger of Power Quality Testing published a report "ANALYSIS OF PUBLIC SHOCK AND ELECTROCUTION CASES" after collecting and analyzing data of accidental public shock and electrocution accidents. Voigtsberger gathered his data searching through newspaper database between 1980 and the present. He found 54 electrocutions and 18 shocks due to contact with with public energized surfaces.

StreetZaps.com founder Blair Sorrel contacted us after seeing our article about Sammy's electrocution and asked us to disseminate the following information so that you can protect yourself, pedestrians, children and pets from outdoor shockings or electrocution.

How to Slay an Invisible Danger

Blair Sorrel, Founder

Contact voltage is a chronic hidden hazard that can readily victimize an unsuspecting dog, walker, or both. No dog lover could possibly observe a more horrifying scene than witnessing his beloved pet instantaneously maimed or tragically electrocuted. When you exercise your pooch, please exercise greater prudence. Common outdoor electrical and metal fixtures may shock or even kill your vulnerable dog. And depending upon the current, the walker will be bitten and like poor Aric Roman, suffer permanently. But you can, indeed, self-protect.

Just start to adopt this simple strategy — EYEBALL THE BLOCK, AND AVOID A SHOCK. Take a few seconds and make your trajectory toward generally safer, free standing, non-conductive surfaces, ie., plastic, wood, cardboard. Intuit your dog’s cues and if it’s resistant, change directions. Work site perimeters may be live so try to elude them. If necessary, switch sides of the street or your hands when leading to skirt hazards. If you traverse the same route, you may memorize locations of potential dangers. Carry your pooch when in doubt. Consider indoor restroom products like PottyPark when external conditions are chancy or RopeNGo’s hardware-free leash and harness. And don’t rely on dog booties as a palliative as they will actually put your pet at even greater risk since the dog can’t tell you they’re leaking! To learn to more, please see StreetZaps. A safer walk is yours year round if you are willing to open to your eyes and mind to it.
