Most kitchen burns are relatively minor and can be treated at home. However, severe burns need immediate medical attention as they can affect muscle tissue, bones and blood vessels.

Burn injuries, however, can be caused by other substances not just the ones one might generally think of. For example, you can get serious burns from sunlight, radiation and chemicals. There are other side effects of burn injuries than just to skin tissue. For example, smoke inhalation can cause to respiratory disease and problems.

Burn injuries in motor vehicle accidents

Motor vehicle accidents can also be the source of burn injuries. While the most common type of car accident injury is whiplash or broken bones, sometimes a motor vehicle will catch on fire due to a collision and the occupants of the vehicle will suffer burns.

Burn injuries in public venues

Sometimes freak accidents occur while people are out and about which result in a burn injuries. One example is when a restaurant server or flight attendant spills hot food or drink resulting in a burn injury.

Woman burned by hot wax at beauty salon awarded $100,000 settlement

The Connecticut Law Tribune reports that Debbie Becker, a woman who was burned by hot wax at a beauty salon while getting a "Brazilian wax" treatment, has settled her negligence lawsuit for $100,000.

According to the report, Becker contracted with the salon to remove her pubic hair in a procedure commonly called "Brazilian wax" or "bikini waxing." During the waxing process, the technician allegedly allowed wax to spill onto the plaintiff's labia which caused burn injuries.

Becker was treated at an urgent care facility and she suffered significant pain during urination, sitting and also had to refrain from sexual activity. Her medical bills were $750 but her lawyer said she is still psychologically traumatized.

The lawsuit was settled in mediation for $100,000. Becker's attorney, Pamela Levin Cameron, said that bikini waxing burn injuries may be more common than people might imagine but many women may be just too embarrassed to seek a legal remedy.

What should I do if someone suffers a burn injury?

The most common burn injuries are caused by scalds from hot liquids such as coffee or tea or even the tap when a water heater is set too high, contact burns from touching a hot object or the stove and flame burns caused by open flames such as one finds in fireplaces, barbecues or flammable materials.

If someone you know suffers a burn injury, here are the procedures you should take:

  • If the person has clothing that is on fire, you need to smother the fire using a blanket or something similar or dropping the person to the ground and rolling them until the fire is extinguished.
  • Cool the burnt area by running cold water on it for at least 20 minutes.
  • Call 911 or seek other appropriate medical treatment

Static electricity charge causes gas pump fire that kills teen

L. David Byers, 19 of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, died after inhaling super heated gases caused by a gas fire started by a static electricity charge at a gas pump.

While Byers' death is an extremely rare and freak accident, it is important that motorists realize that static electricity charges can build up on ones body which could potentially lead to a fire at a gas pump.

Static electricty is the build up of an electric charge on an object. The static charge will remain on the object or person until it is neutralized by a discharge. Static electricity charges have known to cause explosiions or fires in industrial settings and in hospitals

seattle car accident attorneyElectrostatic discharges can be a danger when a person is fueling their car at a gas station. In one report of gas fires at pumps, four of the five victims were women. This is often due to electrostatic charges building up on sweaters when women re-enter their car during fueling. Most victims suffered burn injuries.

To be safe, motorists should:

  • never re-enter their automobile while fueling as this can increase an electrostic charge
  • discharge static electricty -- grounding themselves -- by touching a metal object like their car before and after fueling
  • never smoke at gas stations
  • never remove the gas pump nozzle in the case of a fire and leave the immediate area

There have been numerous reports of cell phones causing gasoline pump fires, but testing -- including by the popular TV show MythBusters -- disproved this.

Burn Awareness Week highlights scald injuries

Every year, approximately half a million people are treated for burn injuries in the United States and Canada. In Washington state, more than 400 people are treated for scald injuries.

Scald injuries are a type of burn injury caused by hot liquids or gases. Steam is often the cause of a scald injury but hot bath water, showers and spilled hot drinks are often common causes of scald injuries. According to information released by the Washington State Fire Marshal, Paul Perz, scald burn injuries are the second leading cause of death of children four years of age and younger.

To prevent scald injuries:

  • Set water heater thermometers to 120 degrees F or less and mix hot water with cold water when filling a bath tub.
  • Keep children away from the path between stove and sink.
  • Use oven mitts and turn pot lids outward when removing and turn pot handles inwards.
  • Do not head baby bottles in the microwave.
  • Test and stir microwave-heated foods before serving.
