Types of Elder Abuse

The National Research Council Panel to Review Risk and Prevalence of Elder Abuse and Neglect estimates that between one and two million senior citizens have been the victims of elder abuse. Often times, the person responsible for or hired to care for the elderly is the culprit of abuse.
Types of Elder Abuse:
- Physical Abuse -- when a person inflicts pain on an elderly person. This can include slapping, pinching and punching.
- Sexual Abuse -- includes rape, fondling, exposing or any type of unwanted sexual contact. It can also include having sex with someone who is not mentally competent to assent.
- Neglect -- when a caretaker does not perform the basic necessities for an elderly person including basic hygiene, cleanliness and nutrition. Signs of neglect can include bedsores, infections, and malnutrition.
- Financial Abuse or exploitation -- when a caregiver or other person fraudulently gains access to an elderly person's financial assets. This can include over charging for contracted work, stealing funds, diverting an elderly person's assets and Ponzi schemes.
- Emotional abuse -- when the caregiver verbally abuses, berates, harangues or harasses an elderly person.
- Chemical restraint -- when a caregiver gives a nursing home resident medication or drugs not prescribed for them to restrain them.
- Nursing home abuse or neglect -- when a resident of a nursing home is a victim of any of the above types of abuse.
