Keeping young teens safe in summer

Teens often enjoy swimming in rivers and lakes but often they can get into dangerous situations.
  • Make sure your child knows how to swim
  • Don't let your child swim alone

FDA says generic Tamiflu may contain dangerous ingredients

The FDA says a product sold as 'Generic Tamiflu' on the internet has been found to contain an antibiotic which could cause serious and life-threatening side effects to people who are allergic to penicillin products.

FDA tested the 'Generic' version of Taimiflu that there representatives were able to purchase on the internet and found that it did not contain oseltamivir, an ingredient in the genuine Tamiflu. Instead, it contained cloxacillin. The FDA was able to purchase these so-called Generic programs without a written prescription; currently there is no generic version of Tamiflu available for sale in the US.

The FDA advises consumers to purchase medication only from National Association of Boards of Pharmacy cites. Check the Verified Internet Pharmacy Sites (VIPPS) web-site to determine if an online pharmacy is legitimate.

Electronic stability control reduces fatal car accidents by 33%

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released the findings of a study which finds that Electronic Stability Control (ESC), when installed in passenger automobiles, prevents fatal car accidents and reduces single-vehicle rollover accidents dramatically.

ESC is a computerized technology that detects loss of steering control. ESC automatically applies the brakes and helps control steering. It applies brakes to individual wheels. Some ESC systems also reduces engine power.

IIHS statistics show that ESC reduces fatal motor vehicle accidents by 33% and reduces the risk of single-vehicle rollover accidents by 73%.

In fact, IIHS estimates that 15,600 lives could have been saved between 2002-2008 if the technology was installed.

The IIHS believes so strongly that ESC improves driver and passenger safety that it only gives its TOP SAFETY PICK award to vehicles with them installed.

In the model year 2010, ESC is standard on 88% of cars, SUVs, and 62% of pickup trucks. By 2012, all new automobiles will be built with ESC.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

In the United States, approximately 800,000 people have cerebral palsy which is a term encompassing motor and nerve conditions which are permanent in nature and effects a persons movement, posture and limits their activity. The condition can also effect sensations, cognition, communication, perception, behavior and can be accompanied by secondary musculoskeletal problems.

There are multiple causes of cerebral palsy (CP) including:

  • Prenatal - Some fetuses develop CP in the womb. In some cases an infection in the mother is the suspected cause. Others believe that it is caused by the death of a twin in the womb when the twin shared a circulatory system or the same placenta.

  • Premature birth - approximately 40%-50% of children with CP were born prematurely. Premature babies are not fully developed and at increased risk of hypoxia injury to the brain.

  • Birth Injury - 5% -10% of those with CP may have suffered a preventable birth injury. Some of these preventable injuries include allowing labor to progress too long ,leaving a baby in the birth canal for too long, a delayed c-section, incorrect use of the vacuum extractor, misuse of forceps or deprivation of oxygen.

  • After birth injury - some babies develop CP in the first few years of life. In some cases it is due to severe jaundice, lead poisoning, car accidents, brain injury, shaken baby syndrome, near drowning and illnesses such as encephalitis or meningitis. It can also be caused by asphyxia caused by choking on foreign objects including toys and food.

Seatbelts or ticket says Washington State Patrol

The Washington State Patrol is reminding drivers and passengers to properly use seat belts or they are in violation of Washington's seat belt law and they could be given a $124 fine. The Washington seat belt law which went in effect 2002 allows police to stop a motorist if he or she or an occupant is not wearing a seat belt. This aggressive law is one reason that Washington state has one of the highest seat belt compliance rates in the U.S.

Seat belt usage greatly increase a person's chance of surviving a car accident. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that seat belts saved more than 75,000 lives between 2004 an 2008.
seattle car accident attorneySeat belts are designed to apply the force of the accident across the chest and pelvis which can withstand the forces of an accident. Wearing a seat belt improperly such as under an arm or behind a person's back can actually increase the likelihood of injury.

Proper placement of the lap belt:

  • Snug: the belt should be over the lower part of the pelvis. If the belt rides up on the stomach, it can, in the event of an accident, injure intestines, liver or other internal organs.
  • Posture: sit up straight because slouching allows the belt to ride up.
  • Clothing: heavy or bulky clothing should be removed so that the lap belt is in close proximity to the pelvic bones.
  • Buckle Up: Always use your seat belt even when pregnant.

Proper placement of the shoulder belt:

  • Position: Over the top part of your shoulder and across the chest. The shoulder belt distributes crash forces over the rib cage and protects internal organs.
  • Slack: There should never be more than an inch of slack.
  • Tucking: Do not tuck your shoulder belt under an arm. This could increase the chances of broken ribs.
  • Booster Seats: If a child is too small so that a shoulder belt does not fit properly, they need to be in a booster seat.

Husband awarded $2.4M in wrongful death lawsuit

safety_post.jpgJohn Gerrity has disclosed that he has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the city of Menlo Park and the city has agreed to pay him a $2.4 million settlement.

Gerrity's wife, Deborah Johnson, was critically injured in a bicycle accident in July 2007 and she died several days later of a head injury.

According to a report on Mercury News, Johnson's bicycle accident was due to the fact that Menlo Park Public Works Department had inadvertently left a flat black octagonal rubber disk they had used as a lane divider in the roadway. The orange post had become detached from the octagonal piece so Johnson did not see the disk and she hit it with her bicycle wheel, causing her to fall and strike her head.

Gerrity's lawsuit claimed that the Menlo Park Works Department was negligent in their use of this device as the federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices prohibits the use of such a device, "posts or raised pavement markers should not be used to separate bicycle lanes from adjacent travel lanes."

Gerrity has made his lawsuit public because he is trying to raise awareness about the many hazards on the road left by road construction. He says that that safety measures need to be adhered to even in temporary work zones.

Queets is a community in western Washington near the Pacific Ocean at the northern edge of the Quinault Indian Reservation and about 40 miles south of Forks near Highway 101.
