DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE (DDD):

Degeneration of the intervertebral discs of the spine is caused by the dehydration of the jelly like substance making up the interior portion of each disc. DDD is often the result of accidents or trauma, such as auto accidents, but it can also be the result of simple lifting or the aging process. DDD causes chronic lower back pain, as well as pain in the hips, buttocks and thighs. It can result in muscle weakness in the knees. Although many times DDD can be treated conservatively, sometimes surgery is required, including a discectomy or spinal fusion.
